International Dutch Oven Society
Many events all year round are dedicated to cooking in cast iron cookware. The International Dutch Oven Society (IDOS) is the premier organization in the United States that geared to all Dutch oven enthusiasts.
Their mission statement is “To pursue, promote and protect the art of Dutch oven cooking; to develop more enthusiastic relations between the general public and other societies; to encourage participation in events, promote Dutch Oven Gatherings; provide the best support to all chapters and members; in general ensure the preservation of cooking in Dutch ovens.” The members promote good friends, good food and good fun among themselves as well as for enthusiasts that want to learn more or new techniques for cast iron cooking.
The society has a number of Dutch Oven Gatherings (DOG)’s in the United States that are great fun to attend. Upcoming events in March include:
Monthly meetings of the Louisiana DOS are held in three portions of the state. In northern Louisiana DOG’s are the first Saturday of each month at Chemin A Haut State Park in Bastrop Louisiana. The second Saturday of each month has a DOG in Lake Bistineau State Park in Doyline, La. The third Saturday of each month host the D’Arbonne Cookers at Lake D’Arbonne State Park in Farmersville, La. Central Louisiana has a DOG the second Saturday of each month in Bogue Chitto State Park in Franklinton, La. And a meting on the fourth Saturday of each month at Forts Randoff and Buhlow in Pineville, La. Southern Louisiana chapters meet the first Saturday of each month at Longfellow State Historic Site in St. Martinsville, La. The second Saturday of each month a DOG is held in Palmetto Island State Park in Abbeville, La. The fourth Saturday of each month a DOG is held at Sam Houston Jones State Park in Lake Charles, La.
In Louisiana, the Friends of Palmetto Island State Park host a DOG on the 2nd Saturday of each month.
March 11, 2017-The So Cal Chapter of the IDOS is holding its 13th Annual Spring DOG at Sylvan Park in Redlands, California.
March 12, 2017- The Cracker Trail Chapter of IDOS is holding a citrus theme DOG in Central Florida.
March 18, 2017- The Alabama Dutch Oven Society has a DOG in Oak Mountain State Park in Pelham Alabama.
March 25, 2017- This DOG is a 2 state event in North Carolina and Virginia.
March 31 through April 2, 2017-The 3rd Annual Big DOG in Conroe Texas. It is held at the Lake Conroe KOA campground.
The American Chuck Wagon Association
These events are a real treat, not only do the cooks use Dutch ovens and all cast iron cookware, but they serve the food out of the redesigned old chuck wagons. There are competitions for the food and also for the chuck wagon’s authenticity in appearance as in the old west. These are events for the entire family with food and games and activities for the kids of all ages. Some have Wild West shootouts and country music concerts as well as rodeos and other competitive sports for adults and children.
March 3-4, 2017- A chuck wagon cook off is scheduled at the Lazy E Arena in Gutherie, Oklahoma.
March 4, 2017- Cook off in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.
March 4, 2017- Cinch Timed Event Chuck Wagon Cook Off Breakfast at the Lazy E Arena in Guthrie, Oklahoma.
March 4-5, 2017- Chuck Wagon Cook off at Clabough’s Campground in Tennessee.
March 9-11, 2017- 14th Annual Southeastern Cowboy Gathering and chuck wagon cook off at the Booth Western Art Museum in Georgia.
March 11, 2017- Booth Museum Invitational in Cartersville, Georgia in which the winners of previous competitions compete against each other.
March 30-April 1, 2017- The Annual ACWA Championship Cook off is in Fredericksburg, Texas
Gather up your family and attend one of these events in March. You will most likely be hooked on them after just one DOG or ACWA event where you can hone your skills in cast iron cooking.
